The Sun
I’ve had low vitamin D since I can remember. Although I’ve been in the Sunshine State for a few years now, the doctor says I still need more sun! Everything is about balance. The sun is the most important element for life on Earth. However, when the gases we contribute trap the sun’s UV rays into our atmosphere, it brings the planet to a slow boil.
Especially this time of year, I make every effort to do as much as I can outside. Here at Lamb of God, April welcomes an invitation for us to focus on the life all around us. The new life ushered in with the Resurrection begs us to consider the blooming and vibrant life outside. When we think about God’s masterpiece, the trees, the oceans, the birds, and the marshes, the feeling of “awe” should be quickly chased by a feeling of responsibility. We are called to be caretakers.
Geographically, the United States is lucky compared to other countries around the globe. Given where we sit, we will likely be thought of as a haven for the global south. Imagine food scarcity, polluted drinking water, farming land either becoming submerged or completely dry. Millions are displaced every year even now. As these things go, the poor will suffer the most. The changing climate will impact all of us… some before others.
I often struggle with this topic because it leaves me feeling overwhelmed and helpless, which is the exact worst reaction. Hope is what the Jesus story is at its core. As stewards, called to care for God’s creation, we must face it head-on. Our relationship with God depends on how to treat the least among us. We cannot have a healthy relationship with God if we do not have a healthy relationship with Creation.
Folks, it’s time to go to work. It’s time for the Church to lead the way. We cannot lose hope. We must believe that our effort may be felt globally. I’m taking my own advice and putting the screens down! Together, we are called to roll up our sleeves, serve those in need, and absorb some much-needed vitamin D!
Meet you outside,
Pastor Lucas
