Icing
“More Icing!” was shouted on a cold lazy day in December. Alex and I spent a playful few hours crafting this sugar cookie church. We bumped elbows, pulled our hair strands from the sticky bell tower, and scooped up marshmallows that had rolled under the kitchen counter. And after a few cracked walls, several burnt rooftops, the church finally came together nicely. Never before had I ever relied so heavily on icing to solve my problems. The icing was able to restore clean breaks and hold sturdy relatively massive spices of cookie together. We declared “more icing” as we gouged all the creases and corners.
The church, not as a building, but as people, takes time. Churches take patience and they often turnout differently than anticipated. Christ is the icing that holds us together. When things become challenging, that is the clear indication that we need more icing, more Christ. Let love hold us together!
Truth be told, so much happened to the pieces of this cookie church that it ultimately became inedible. It was only after the construction that we realized how fun it was to put it together. The enjoyment of building it is why we did it, not to eat it. Realizing that the most important aspect of Christian life is about the process of creating God’s Church. We will never fully see it come to fruition. It is about journeying together as people a part of a Christ-centered community. We get closer to completing the craft the more we love and lean on one another with support and care. As we look toward the new year, the us bake, decorate, and build our cookie church. Christ will hold us together!
